Teach Me to Pray: Exploring Catholic Prayer
It was a joy to welcome many hundreds of new Catholics in Southwark Archdiocese to the Church at Easter! Perhaps the greatest joy of being a Christian is realising that God is alive and active, and that we can have a ‘vital and personal relationship with the living and true God’, as the Catechism puts it (CCC 2558).
In our daily communications, we go to great lengths to be 'present' or 'online', but do we have or desire a strong and true connection with God? How do we do this? How might we build a better, more fulfilling relationship with God?
The key to this relationship is prayer. Whereas prayer comes easily and naturally to some, to others of us it is more of a struggle. Whichever the case may be, God is eager to establish and deepen this relationship with each of us individually, as well as corporately, through prayer. Throughout the history of the Church, many different ways of prayer have been discovered and developed, all of them with the aim to help us draw closer to God and deepen our intimate and life-giving relationship with Him.
The Spirituality Commission of the Archdiocese of Southwark has developed a short prayer programme called ‘Teach me to Pray’ to explore and experience some of these riches from the living Tradition of the Church, with a view to help all of us draw closer to God through prayer. The programme, which starts in October, consists of four hour-long online sessions, each exploring a different way of prayer, as well as an in-person Day of Reflection at one of our diocesan retreat centres. The Day of Reflection will be based around themes of the season of Advent, building on the prayer experiences from the programme.
