Advent from the Agency

We are soon to start the Church’s new year with the season of Advent - the period of preparation for Christ’s dual coming, first in the Incarnation and again at the end of time in glory. We, at the Agency for Evangelisation and Catechesis, invite you to journey with us in a variety of ways over the next four weeks.

Weekly meditations

Following the pattern established in recent months, we are offering a weekly scriptural meditation on the Gospels of Advent which can be used by individuals or by groups over video-conferencing software. Many people have engaged with these reflections from Scripture and full instructions are provided on their use via Zoom or equivalent.

Daily reflections

The diocesan Spirituality Commission are, once more, offering a series of daily reflections on Scripture and the season. You can sign up for these via the link on our Advent resources page.

An Advent Journey

At the invitation of Bishop Pat Lynch, Fr Michael Winstanley, a Salesian of Don Bosco, has recorded three short talks on the Gospel of Mark. Each of these videos offers us the chance to slow down with St Mark as we start the Church’s Year B. The first looks at Jesus himself, the second at the Twelve, Jesus’ apostles and the third video explores the opposition to Jesus and to the minor characters who St Mark brings to the fore throughout his gospel account. Additionally, each video is accompanied by a thematic overview sheet for ongoing reflection.

Our advisors also recommend the 21-day retreat developed by Cardinal-elect Raniero Cantalamessa and Chris Stefanick to which you can sign up at the following link: coaching.reallifecatholic.com/unshakeable-joy as we move towards Christmas.

Resources for building domestic traditions

We are also looking to bring you a pair, in the first instance, of resources for use in the home. One for the building and blessing of a wreath to mark the progression through the season of Advent and the other featuring prayers and ponderings around the crib/creche. If you have a particular tradition or resource that you find helps your family focus on the season of Advent please let us know at aec@rcaos.org.uk.

One final thing

We also hope to bring you a special extra at the end of Advent, via this website and our social media accounts. So please stay tuned!
